#11 Same Direction Cannon Double Headed Snake Pawn Formation vs Double Ranked Chariot - Red R2+6, Black R9=4 variation.

#11 Same Direction Cannon Double Headed Snake Pawn Formation vs Double Ranked Chariot - Red R2+6, Black R9=4 variation.

Outcome: Advantage to Red

  1. C2=5  C8=5    2. H2+3  H8+7
  3. R1=2  R9+1    4. R2+6  …………

As mentioned in previous post #10, Red R2+6 is not efficient. The correct move for Red would be P3+1.

  4. …………  R9=4

We had concluded that Black P3+1 would lead the advantage to Black if Red played R2+6 in previous move.

However, Black plays R9=4 instead of P3+1.

In this case, how could Red gain the advantages?

  5. R2=3  …………

This is the correct move for Red.

At this point, there are 4 main variations for Black.

a) R4+3
b) R4+6
c) R4+7
d) H2+3

a) R4+3

5. …………  R4+3    6. P3+1  H2+1

Current board status analysis:
1) R4+3 is the most common mistake made by Xiangqi beginners. There is no direction/objective for Black Riverbank chariot. There is no  target for Black's chariot to attack.
2) Black riverbank chariot would be the potential target for Red right' horse H3+4 or Red P3+1 in the future.

Outcome:
Due to Black mistake, the advantage turn to Red.

b) R4+6

  5. …………  R4+6    6. C8+2  R4=2
  7. C8=7  H2+1    8. H8+7  R2-1
  9. C7=3  R2=3   10. R9+2  C2=3
 11. H3-5  H7-8   12. C5+4  A4+5
 13. C3+5

Current board status analysis:
1) Black R4+6 seems a good move, however the reality is the worse move.
2) Red took the opportunity to develop his left flank by chasing the Black's chariot.
3) In this example, Red wins the game easily.

Outcome:
Advantage turn to Red.

c)R4+7

  5. …………  R4+7    6. H8+7  R4=3
  7. C8+2  P3+1    8. H3-5  C2=4
  9. C8=3

Current board status analysis:
1) Similar to previous variation
2) Red has well develop this pieces for both flank, whereas, Black's right flank still not develop yet. The reason is because Black's chariot moves too often, and caused delay of other piece.

Outcome:
Advantage turn to Red.

d)H2+3

  5. …………  H2+3    6. C8+2  P3+1
  7. C8=3

Current board status analysis:
1) Black was planning to play C5-1 then follow by C5=7. However, Red C8+2 had interrupted Black's plan
2) Similar to other variation, Red applies the same strategy by attacking Black's left horse. Black is in difficult situation to protect his left's horse.

Outcome:
Red had gained the advantages since Black missed the opportunity to play P3+1 in ply #4.The correct for Black is P3+1.
